Commentary: Christmas-Free Vacation

...At our house we have successfully evaded another commercial Christmas.
Deeming both the expectation of such gifts and the quest for them to be a source
of far more evil than good, we ceased buying Christmas presents for anyone some
years ago. There aren’t any believing Christians in our home anyway, which would
only worsen the hypocrisy of celebrating the arbitrarily selected birthday of a
religious zealot, however well-meaning he may have been. Even for those who
don’t view the Christmas story as just another myth, the tradition of
gift-giving has been reduced to the pointless cultivation of greed and
entitlement in a culture that already knows too much of both...
